Nobody buys pickle by category. They buy it for the curd rice they are about to eat, or the idli on a Sunday morning. Pick the meal and how much heat you can take, and we'll narrow nineteen jars down to three.

Our story
It began with the neighbours asking for one more jar
In 1995 Nadella Indira was making avakaya for the house, the way her mother had. Word travelled down the street, then to Vijayawada, and eventually to a nephew in New Jersey who wanted six jars sent over. Thirty years on it is the same kitchen and the same recipes — only the parcels go further.
Nothing is bought in and re-labelled. If a batch of mangoes is not right, we do not make avakaya that fortnight.

What people write back
The avakaya tastes like my grandmother's, which I did not expect to be able to buy. Ordered three kilos for the family.
Arrived in eleven days, sealed properly, nothing leaked. The gongura prawns is the real thing — I have stopped looking elsewhere.
I asked for the tomato pickle without garlic and they made it that way. Not one shop had agreed to do that before.
